Description
Watersport
Great water sport activities in Bali await those looking for something beyond mere swimming and snorkelling. Adrenaline junkies can get their fix from some boat-towed action, high altitudes, and splashing wind-in-hair moments. Most of these activities are focused around Tanjung Benoa – the de facto playground for Bali water sports. Surfing remains the main feature, with breaks around the famous beach resort areas such as Kuta and other thrills – from walking on the seabed to discovering Bali’s great underwater scenes – are offered off several coasts.
GWK Cultural Park
Rise from the rugged hills of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, the magnificent Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue stands watch over the island. The towering statue is Bali’s most iconic landmark and depicts the Hindu God Wisnu, atop his mount, the mythical eagle, Garuda. The Garuda is the national emblem of Indonesia, an enduring symbol of freedom from oppression. Soaring to a height of over 120 meters, this is one of the tallest monumental statues in the world, higher than both the Statue of Liberty and Christ the Redeemer.
The statue makes a stunning central feature of GWK, a fascinating 60-hectare cultural park that draws visitors from around the globe and provides a tantalizing glimpse into Bali’s fascinating heritage through intriguing cultural performances, legendary folklore tales, immense sculptures, and dramatic cinematic presentation. Enjoy panoramic island views as you explore the park on foot or by Segway. Indulge in Indonesian heritage cuisine, immerse yourself in a land steeped in mythology, or plan your next big event in one of GWK’s epic venues.
Balangan Beach
Balangan Beach is one of Bali’s most scenic spots, featuring a gorgeous half-kilometre stretch of golden sand between vegetated limestone cliffs. Locally referred to as Pantai Balangan, there’s a reef just off the coast that creates one of the longest left-hander breaks on the island.
This surfing paradise attracts wave riders from around the world, who enjoy most of the south-western Bukit coastline, together with Balangan’s sister breaks of Dreamland, Impossibles, Padang Padang, Suluban and Uluwatu further south.
Uluwatu Temple
One of Bali’s six key temples, Uluwatu Temple, locally known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu (with Luhur meaning ‘something of divine origin’) is one of the most popular spots if you’re embarking on a cultural journey of the region and provides a true slice of Balinese culture.
It’s renowned for its magnificent location. Perched atop a steep cliff approximately 70 metres above the crashing ocean below, it makes for the most beautiful backdrop at sunset.
Captivating Balinese Kecak and fire dance performances are held every evening at an amphitheatre nearby, where a troupe of around 75 male dancers descend onto the stage with extended arms and shaking hands, chanting a ‘chak!’ chorus repeatedly. As the sun goes down, fire becomes an increasing component of the ritual.
